What ELSE to find in New York

Me ha llamado la atención una noticia que salía hoy en A3 sobre una curiosa iniciativa en Nueva York y he querido buscar más información. 


Si vais pronto a NYC podréis, además de contemplar la Estatua de la Libertad, pasear por Central Park, subir al Empire State e infinitas cosas más, dar una vuelta por Brooklyn y ver ¡¡HUERTAS EN LAS AZOTEAS!!

Un grupo llamado "Brooklyn Grange" (web)ha creado el huerto más grande del mundo en una azotea de la ciudad de Nueva York, en un edificio de seis plantas construído en el año 1919. Se llama Brooklyn Grange Farm y en los casi DOS MIL metros cuadrados de terreno se cultivan más de treinta variedades de frutas y verduras orgánicas, incluyendo tomates, pimientos, lechuga, col, zanahorias, hinojo, ...


Sus creadores, Annie Novak y Ben Flanner, cuentan con la ayuda de un grupo de restaurantes de cocina ecológica, un grupo de arquitectos,una empresa que se dedica a la reutilización y renovación de espacios comerciales, voluntarios y amigos, y han conseguido que su marca de productos orgánicos sea de las más solicitadas en la Gran Manzana y abastece a restaurantes neoyorkinos (Marlow and Sons, Anella,Vesta Trattoria...) .


Utilizan abono orgánico y están orientados a la comunidad: ofrecen visitas a familias, voluntarios y grupos escolares, y les animan a participar.

I was watching the news on TV tonight, when I suddenly felt curious about an initiative carried out in New York City, and I ran to look for more information. Here it goes: 


If you plan to visit New York, apart from seeing the Statue of Liberty, walking in Central Park, getting on the lift of the Empire State or any of the many many things offered in this city, you can go for a walk in Brooklyn and see ROOFTOP-FARMS!! Isn´t that amazing?


A group named "Brooklyn Grange"(website) had this idea, and created the largest rooftop-farm in the middle of the city, on top of a 6-floor-building that dates back to 1919! 


Its name is Brooklyn Grange Farm, and more than 30 varieties of organic fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, carrots, cabbage and fennel grow in this 2000 square metres roof!
